New trend in Kitchens: Colour blocking

I find that Kitchens can often feel impersonal and bland, which is such a shame as it’s such an important part of anyone’s home.

This is why I absolutely love the idea of colour blocking in your kitchen. It can be done with all budgets and all sizes. What I love about designer Patricia Bustos latest fantastical kitchen project, is not only the unexpected materials and colour palette, but the simple idea of colour blocking your kitchen cabinets to make a huge impact.

Daria Zinovatnaya and Studio Rhonda have taken a similar idea by using the same tiles in different colours to create a unique space. This easy idea zones the kitchen, but allows the space to feel cohesive by buying the same style of tile.

  • Four Florists you need to know about

Four Florists you need to know about

    Happy New Year!

I want to showcase four florists who’s work makes my heart skip a beat. I thought what could be a better way to dive back into the new year than celebrating, floristry that is evocative, beautiful, exciting and sometimes suprising.

Brittany Asch behind ‘Brrch’ creates fantastical work, that is a wonderful juxtaposition of colourful retro nostalgia with edge of surreal oddness, creating work that feels very modern, fashion forward and her arrangements really feel like works of contemporary art.

Ruby Barber behind ‘Mary Lennox’ creates emotional, strong flawless installations that set the mood for any image. Allowing one or a few flora or fawna to take centre stage, creates a bold unapologetic celebration of the plant life itself.

Hattie Fox behind ‘That flower shop’ creates works that feels like its been created with oil paints. Colours of Turner and Constable, this Hackney based florists work, feel like it belongs in a Dickension living room. However, its unepexpected mix of flora, scale and postioning, defiantly makes her work feel modern and trend led.

Anna and Ellie behind ‘The flower appreciation society’ work is a celebration of floral whimsy. Both delicate and bold at the same time, their work feels like stepping into a Manor house’s cutting garden. However their quirky mix of  foliage, flora and eccentricity creates something fresh and exciting.

  • An Interiors love letter to India Mahdavi

An Interiors love letter to India Mahdavi

India Mahdavi is an Architect and Interior Designer who has been quoted as saying…

“Sunshine is happiness, and my work is about happiness”

When discussing Interior Design (or life), happiness seems to be a very good place to start. You may want a space to feel cool, or calm or even sexy, but really if it makes you happy; I believe its achieved it goal.

India’s use of colour in design is unexpected, fun and part of her magical happy making. India is also an inspiring innovator, leading the biggest trends interiors, for example she definitely put the colour pink on the map.

Until India designed the restaurant at Sketch, who knew pink could be edgy, fun and sophisticated all at the same time.

All her spaces have a nostalgic feel, without an ounce of kitsch or pastiche. They make unusual colour palettes and odd juxtapositions, feel familiar and new and exciting all at the same time.

I could go on and on (however you probably have coffee to make, jobs to get to) my final ode to India’s work is her combination of curved lines, sumptuous velvets and playful shapes, became a celebration of modern femininity.

This all adds up, creating a world that I would like to hang out in her for a very long time.

If your lucky enough to live in Paris or be visiting , Launching today India Mahdavi has done a collaboration with Monoprix of fabulous accessories, starting at 9 euros.

  • how to buy a sofa

    how to buy a sofa

The question I get asked the most by friends seeking interiors advice, is how to buy a sofa. Being a piece in your home, you literally can’t live with out and something that I hope to keep for at least 10 years, I know how daunting it can feel to make a confident in your decision. Here are 10 points I think everyone should consider before buying their big investment.

1.Is the sofa frame made of wood? Yes! Then this is a great start, it will be longer lasting than a frame made of composite and easier to repair if ever needed.

2.Are you planning to extend your family? I know this can be hard one to envisiage, however if your getting a pet or having a baby, then checking if the covers are machine washable, could be a big must for you. This leads to…

3.Synthetic mix is usually a lot harder wearing, but always get a swatch or try sitting on it first, to check if they feel cheap or scratchy.

4.Talking swatches, see if you can loan the biggest swatch possible from the shop your considering purchasing from. Then put it in the space the sofas going in, look at it in the light your going to look at it in every day and sit in it for a night, how does it fare.

5.Does it have a guarantee from the supplier, if not question why.

6.You want the seat to be at least 90cm in depth, anything shallower will make you feel like your perching at a bus stop.

7.Are the seats feather or foamed stuff, my previous very expensive sofa came only with feather cushions and after just over a year, I had to re stuff. We ended up adding foam to the feather mix, to make sure the cushions held their shape. Pure foam, is usually a sign of a cheap make and can make the sofa feel very stiff.

8.How bespoke can it be? for example Sofa.com and Loaf offer different feet and covers, which can totally transform the look and style. Something that can make your sofa future proof , as you can then upgrade or create a new feel, without starting from scratch.

9.Go to to stores and sit on sofas. Have a longue, bring a coffee and get a feel for what shape and style suits your frame and most importantly bring your partner, flat mate, whoever you live with to see if it suits their shape too.

10.And finally before you place the order, think about it in the space, its will be one of the biggest pieces of furniture in the room. Do you want it to stand out and sent the tone for the space, the purple velvet or a graphic print might be for you. However is it something you want to blend in and bring your space together, a grey wool or loose muted linen covers may be for you.

Here are some of my favourites….

1.The Isla is a sofa.com best seller and classic, we have inheritated our friends 10 year old Isla and other than fixing a wonky leg, is still going strong and a great family comfy sofa

    2. The Ghost sofa is so relaxed, you feel it goes to Ibiza on a yoga retreat 6 months of the year. Though it has had many imitations, the Ghost still holds its head up high, as the ultimate understated luxury sofa.

    3. This sofa for me the ultimate occasional sofa. Considered, elegant design and would be wonderful if you had a large hallway.

    4. Love it or loathe it, the Toga sofa has after 40 plus years after its launch cemented its self as a design classic. Its playful shape could totally change the feel your room, without trading in comfort or investment (they seem to keep their value on ebay)

  • Why You Need to Buy a Gold Planter Now

Why You Need to Buy a Gold Planter Now

I’ve always loved a gold accessory.

Many many years ago, I found myself suddenly lusting over gold bins in the Harrods Accessories floor. Thinking I should really know better, I hid my desire, never mentioning this heart pounding want in serious magazine trend meetings.

But In the wise words of Spandau Ballet “Gold, always believe in your soul”. I should of outed myself sooner, as it was apparent I wasn’t the only one with this love affair. Thanks to Jonathan Adler, Tom Dixon and many others I realised I was onto a good thing.

Gold still can verge on the edge of “ good taste”, too much can be blinding, the wrong tone can seem cheap and tacky.

However, this is why I love the trend for Gold planters; it elevates a simple cool and understated like a house plant, to an all singing all blinging attention grabbing accesory, while still maintaining its taste factor.

    1. create a home for a plant in an unexpected place
    2. a chic pot for a large plant
    3. small and simple
    4. go full out retro
    5. try the trend for only £6
    6. a future design classic
    7. easy on the eye
    8. one of my favourites
